About FLACDC
FLACDC Mission Statement
Our Mission is to support and advance the affordable housing, economic development and community building strategies of our membership and to build the power of low and moderate income people to achieve greater economic, social and racial justice.
Background
The Florida Alliance of Community Development Corporations (FLACDC) is a member-driven association of nonprofit Community Development Corporations (CDC's) and their partners dedicated to strengthening Florida's community-based development institutions in order to better serve their local communities.
Incorporated in August 2004, the FLACDC grew out of a 2003 meeting of concerned CDC's who wanted a strong state-wide trade association that could speak with one voice. The volunteer board is comprised of diverse CDC executives and staff representing urban, rural, small, medium and large organizations across the state.
Principal Goals & Activities
Our work will generally fall into one of the following categories: advocating and organizing for public and private sector support, developing resources for the field, promoting learning initiatives and capacity building programs, and educating policy makers, the media and the general public about the contributions being made by CDC's across the state.
What is a CDC?
Community Development Corporations (CDC's) are non-profit organizations that strategically redevelop economically depressed areas and undertake a range of activities to stimulate their local economies, including: housing development and management, business incubators and retail space development, and equity investments in or loans to small firms.
They develop projects that the traditional for-profit sector shuns. This is what differentiates them from other types of nonprofit groups.
Some CDC's also provide a variety of social services such as child care, workforce development and job training. The end goal of CDC's is community revitalization that enhances the lives of its low and moderate income residents.
